Why do catalytic converter quotes range from $500 to $3,000?
Three forks: aftermarket federal-spec ($200–$800 part) vs CARB-certified ($400–$1,200) vs OEM ($900–$3,200 — real precious-metal loadings); direct-fit vs welded universal; and how many O2 sensors come out alive. In CARB states (CA, NY, CO and others) the cheap federal part isn't a legal option.
My converter was stolen — what now?
Comprehensive auto insurance typically covers theft minus deductible, and shops now sell shields ($150–$400) worth adding. Trucks and hybrids (Priuses famously) are the prime targets — they sit high or carry rich catalysts.
Will a new converter fix my P0420 code?
Only if the converter was the victim, not the culprit. Persistent misfires, oil burning, or rich running destroyed it — fix those first or you'll buy another converter in 20k miles. Insist the shop documents upstream diagnosis.
