The model
Every fair-price range is computed the same way:
estimate = (labor hours × your state's shop rate) + parts band
Labor hours are editorial ranges per repair and vehicle class, compiled from the classes of sources shops themselves use: flat-rate labor-time guides (Chilton/Mitchell-class systems), manufacturer maintenance schedules, and the spread we observe across real-world quotes. Where access varies wildly between engines (alternators, spark plugs), the range is deliberately wide and the guide says why.
Shop rates are per-state estimates for independent shops and franchise dealers, compiled from published shop-rate surveys (AAA's published repair-cost guidance, state consumer-affairs postings), shops' own posted rates in major metros, and Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data as a floor check — updated 2026-07. Dealers typically run 25–40% above independents for identical work; that spread is real and mostly reflects overhead and OEM-parts policy, not skill.
Parts bands are ranges for quality aftermarket parts and OEM parts by vehicle class. "Quality aftermarket" means established brands a careful shop would install — not the cheapest white-box listing online, which is how quotes below our ranges usually happen.
What the ranges mean — and don't
A range is where an honest, itemized quote usually lands. It is not a promise: your specific engine, rust, prior bodgery, and regional parts availability all move real prices. A quote above our range isn't automatically a rip-off — but every dollar above it should correspond to an itemized line you can question, and our per-repair guides list the legitimate add-ons and the trigger for each.
Data vintage and updates
The current model was compiled in 2026-07 from the published sources above, and rates and parts bands are reviewed monthly. We're now accumulating anonymous reader-submitted quotes through the quote decoder: as each repair's sample grows past a minimum threshold, we recalibrate its range against those observed prices and show the count on that repair's page. Reader quotes are the highest-quality signal available — they're what shops actually charged, not what anyone advertises — so the model gets more grounded as the dataset builds. Until a repair reaches the threshold, its range reflects the published sources above, and every page states the model date it was built from.
Editorial standards
- No shop referral fees, no lead-gating. Estimate sites that sell your contact information to shops have an incentive to be optimistic. We don't, so we aren't.
- Every number has a visible formula. If a figure on this site can't show its work, it doesn't ship.
- Drafted with modern tools, verified by people. Content here is researched and drafted with the help of AI tooling and reviewed for technical accuracy before publication; pages carry review status. Where a claim is an estimate rather than a fact, it's labeled as one.
- Corrections are public. If a range is wrong, the fix and the reason go on the page. Found one? The contact address is in the footer of every page.
Known limits (read this part)
- Hybrid/EV-specific repairs (battery packs, regen braking quirks) are only partially modeled — flagged in guides where relevant.
- Rust-belt labor reality: seized fasteners can legitimately blow past any labor range. Northern readers, add margin.
- State rates are averages over metro and rural markets; a downtown-city shop can sit 20% above its own state's figure legitimately.
- We model the most common configuration of each job. Exotic drivetrains and low-volume models will deviate.
